Tipaskan quaintly derives its name from the Cree term which means “a reserve”, based on the fact that the Mill Woods region was a Cree Indian reserve between 1876 and 1891.
In 1970, the Government of Alberta brought the Mill Woods land bank under its purview because of the increasing prices of residential land in Edmonton. Within a year, the City of Edmonton had designed a development plan for Mill Woods and commenced purchasing land, subdividing it and selling the residential and commercial lots in the area.
Forward wind to 1976, urban development began to take shape in Tipaskan and most residential construction was complete within the next ten years, though some progressed into the early 1990s as well transforming the area into the affordable residential abode it is today.
