The People and The Real Estate in Tawa
Tawa is one of the more recently developed neighbourhoods in South Edmonton. This neighbourhood is part of the Mill Woods area and in fact, lies right at the heart of this section of the city. Developed predominantly in the 1990s, the community has some of the best modern architecture you can see here with homes equipped with all the amenities you can think of. A good range of options, single detached homes, row homes and low rise apartments, allow you to find a home here easily no matter what your budget.
Home to the Grey Nuns Hospital and many other commercial establishments as it is, Tawa is quite well connected with the city’s various locations too. Its proximity to Whitemud Drive as well as Anthony Henday Drive gives it a great advantage in terms of connectivity to Edmonton’s hubs.
Substantial green space ensures that residents here have adequate opportunities to stretch their legs and enjoy the scenic beauty that Edmonton promises. A calm, quiet neighbourhood that is also one of the safest in the city, Tawa is a great place to settle down at.
The New Community of Tawa
Tawa has 34th Avenue on its north side. To the south it has 28th Avenue encircling it. To the west lies the 66th Street and to the east 50th Street. The neighbourhood is surrounded by the communities of Hill view, Minchau, Wienlos, Mill Woods Town Centre, Mill Woods Park, Lee Ridge and Kameyosek.
Tawa was designed to be the centre point of the Mill woods area and this is why you will find quite a few landmarks located here. For example the Edmonton Police Service's South East Division Station is located here and also the Grey Nuns Community Hospital. There are also many other commercial services here as well as community services. An enormous green space within the community has been developed as recreational area too. The residential units are clustered mainly along the northern crest of the neighbourhood while the south-western segment is the commercial area here.
From Tawa, the Mill woods Town Centre is just a quick drive down or you can reach here with a brisk walk too. There are a number of bus stops in the community and it is well connected by public transport. A Valley Line LRT station is proposed here too and once it comes up, residents can quickly get to various parts of Edmonton using the train service.
Mill woods & Meadows Rec Centre are really close by too and since the neighbourhood offers easy access to both the arterial roads of Whitemud Drive and Anthony Henday Drive, reaching Edmonton’s key areas by car presents no issues either.
Your New Tawa Home in Edmonton
What we know as the Mill Woods area today was earlier part of the Cree Papaschase Reserve. You will see that the neighbourhoods here are all usually named after Aboriginal leaders or based on historic events to honour this legacy. The name of this neighbourhood, Tawa, translates into “you are welcome” in Cree.
Over the period between the years 1876 and 1891, the whole of the Mill Woods area was home to a Metis-Cree band under a treaty. This band was led by John Papaschase. In 1891, this reserve was abandoned and the area was added to the agricultural settlements that encircled the City of Edmonton.
Much later, in 1970, cost concerns led to the creation of a land bank in the southeast parts of Edmonton. The year following that, the City began to acquire land from the province to put its development plans into action. Since the Mill Creek ran through the area, it was named after it.
In 1969, the City had already earmarked a 250-acre piece of land in the heart of the Mill Woods area with a view to building a Town Centre here. The idea was to develop this as a multi-land use area with shopping, office space, institutions and also residential units apart from other commercial establishments.
Today, in Tawa, you will find that the primary land use is for institutional purpose. Apart from the Grey Nuns Hospital, there is a school/park site in the centre of the neighbourhood. The school board recently declared the school site as surplus and hence this extra part will also be developed as housing units in the coming years. This does not affect the park site in the neighbourhood.
The majority of the residential construction in Tawa happened in the 1990s although it began earlier that decade. In the 2000s, development was still taking place here.
Things to do in Tawa
Mill woods Town Centre is the go- to place for most Tawa residents when they need to do their everyday shopping. The centre has grocery stores, a library, and optical and dental clinics too, so you have your basic needs taken care of within easy reach of the neighbourhood.
The Mill Woods Recreation Centre takes care of all your fitness and recreation needs. There is a pool here, plus arenas, fitness areas and indoor courts for you to enjoy an active lifestyle. There are also play spaces for younger ones to expend their energy at. In addition to all of these this rec centre also has a double arena where you can enjoy shinny hockey and skating.
The Meadows Community rec centre is also within easy reach for Tawa residents. This is a more expansive rec centre sprawling over some 234, 419 square feet. If the climate is too cold for you to enjoy outdoor activities, this could be the right place to come to because it has enough indoor rec opportunities as well. There is a leisure pool, water slide, whirlpool, steam room, dive platforms. The fitness area has walking track, lifting studio, functional training centre and more. The exclusive gym with high ceilings comes with basketball, badminton and volleyball markings so you can round up a bunch of buddies and have a game here on weekends. Outdoors, they have ball diamonds, trails, spray decks, leisure ice and a multipurpose court too.
