Steinhauer community gets its name from a Canadian clergyman and Ojibway missionary, Henry Bird Steinhauer, who came to Alberta in 1840 and settled there, acting as an interpreter. After being ordained as a minister in 1858, he continued his missionary and religious work for the rest of his life.

Development work began in 1970 while a majority of Steinhauer homes for sale were constructed between 1971 and 1980.

With plenty of schools serving the community including Steinhauer School that offers Elementary to K-6 level of education, D.S. MacKenzie School for seven to nine grades, Harry Ainlay School for grades 10 to 12, there is no dearth of options. Century Park is located to the south-west of Steinhauer where the convenient LRT station is located.  Apart from the transit station, Century Park also provides easy access to various shopping and dining outlets including Starbucks, Bistecca Italian Steakhouse, Brewsters and Spring Roll Kitchen.
