Overlooking the North Saskatchewan River Valley on its west, the community of Ramsay Heights provides its dwellers with a picturesque setting and scenic views. Tucked into the south side of the Riverbend, this small but dynamic community is sprinkled with walking trails and tree-lined streets.
When the affluent neighbourhood was designed, one of the planners’ main objectives was to facilitate an efficient and safe movement of traffic through the area. To fulfill this purpose, the Riverbend Road, a collector roadway bifurcates the neighbourhood from north to south and links the area to a major arterial road putting the bustling hub of the city centre within easy reach. However, on the interior, curvilinear roads and cul-de-sacs limit the amount of non-residential traffic, and the well-placed pathways promote a more active lifestyle in this pedestrian-friendly community.
At the heart of the neighbourhood lies a multi-purpose educational and recreational site, with a commercial area situated close by too. And from a high elevation point, on the south of Riverbend, residents are blessed with breathtaking views of Edmonton. Plus, the community is bolstered with a vibrant league that provides an array of fun activities, and residents enjoy great access to parks and amenities sprinkled throughout the neighbouring communities as well.
Bordered on the east by both Whitemud Drive and Terwillegar Drives, Ramsay Heights is flanked on the south and north by 40 and 51 Avenue respectively; so its dwellers enjoy great access to the heart of the city and neighbouring communities.
Since Riverbend Road connects to Whitemud Freeway, the area has great connectivity to several commercial and employment centres as well. Plus, with ten bus stops in the community, one for every 134 homes, residents have a good alternative transport solution as well.
Ramsay Heights came under the City of Edmonton’s purview in 1960. Within a year, the community was made part of a plan for phased development constituting a large section of the city’s southwest quadrant. By 1969, the Riverbend-Terwillegar Heights Outline Plan, which included Ramsay Heights, had designed a large-scale community, considered the biggest at that time. Then in the early 1970s, the community was subdivided into smaller portions before residential construction commenced, transforming the area into a flourishing homeowners’ haven with a population of close to 3,500 people today.
The neighbourhood was named in honour of Walter Ramsay, a teacher who came to the city in 1899. He later went on to become Edmonton’s first commercial florist after serving as a principal at both the McKay Avenue School and later Queen’s Avenue School. The greenhouse at the Fort Edmonton Park stands as a tribute to Ramsay and his contributions to society.
Most of the residences in Ramsay Heights came up in the late 1970s and early 1980s, and include beautiful single-family detached bungalows, two-storey homes and bi-level and split houses. While many still retain their old world charm, several addresses have undergone a facelift, while others have been remodelled keeping some of the original features intact. While the more affluent residences are found on Whitemud Road and 154 Street, stately townhouses are also nestled along The Riverbend, Riverbend Village, Whitemud Way and The Uplands.
The Oxford Learning Centre meets the educational needs of the kids in the area, and the Generations’ Kindergarten & Nursery School is located close by as well. Plus, there is an array of good established educational institutions in the surrounding communities, which are only a few minutes away including Earl Buxton Elementary School, St. Monica Junior High School and Riverbend Junior High. In addition, Caesar's School of Music offers many programs for all age groups as well.
Blessed with an abundance of shops and recreational areas in and around the vicinity, Ramsay Heights residents have an abundance of amenities and conveniences nearby. While the Terwillegar Shopping Centre, Riverbend Square and Brander Shopping Plaza are located within proximity of the neighbourhood, the Currents of Windermere is a breezy drive of just 12 minutes away via Riverbend Road NW and Terwillegar Drive NW. It is Edmonton's finest new shopping experience and features an array of retailers, conveniences and entertainment options like Cabelas, Five Guys Burgers and Fries, and Safeway as well as big box stores like Home Depot, Walmart and Canadian Tire. So, the inhabitants of Ramsay Heights have great access to world-class shopping, dining, services and leisure options.
Both Whitemud Creek Ravine and Terwillegar Park are fantastic river valley recreational facilities, which are only nine and six minutes away respectively from the neighbourhood. While the former features beautiful picnic sites, multi-use trails and a very popular toboggan hill, the latter boasts a 262-metre-long footbridge, picturesque trails and an off-leash area for dogs as well. So, from walking and hiking to biking and fun family picnics, these areas are outdoor enthusiasts' havens.
For lovely family getaways and to experience more of the great outdoors, families head on to the North Saskatchewan River Valley. The place is home to some of the best water sports the city has to offer including canoeing, jet skiing, kayaking, jet boating and fishing too.
In addition, while the neighbourhood is ideally located only seven minutes away from Fort Edmonton Historical Park, the Edmonton Valley Zoo is an easy drive of 11 minutes away and offers kids and adults alike a fun jungle adventure. Plus, for golf enthusiasts, the Derek Golf and Winter Club is located only seven minutes away via AB-2 S and 119 Street NW.
Perfectly situated only a 20-minute drive away from the pulsating hub of the city, Ramsay Heights offers its residents great connectivity to all the city has to offer, from world-class shopping, dining and leisure options to sports and fantastic recreational facilities. And the Riverbend Community League puts residents of the neighbourhood in touch with the communities of Brander Gardens, Brookside and Rhatigan Ridge. From their Bridge Club, Adult yoga and Green Shack Programs to soccer, tennis, pickleball, there is an array of activities designed for residents of all ages.
Well-planned with great foresight, Ramsay Heights today is a relatively traffic-free community with access to a plethora of retailers and facilities. Whether residents choose to travel by car, cycle or walk, there is an abundance of amenities and services within easy reach. And while this vibrant community is close to the commercial downtown area, it is also just far enough from the bustling district to provide residents with a safe and peaceful setting. Ramsay Heights is a quintessential and popular homeowners’ paradise.
