The People and The Real Estate in Prince Charles
Prince Charles is an idyllic community in North West Edmonton, Alberta. Set in a beautiful river valley, Edmonton is a buzzing city with vibrant arts and entertainment scenes - including a hugely popular Fringe Festival; great shopping; and unique local winter-time pursuits like skijoring! Add to that the excellent amenities, great schools, and quality medical facilities, and you have yourself the perfect setting for a home.
The New Community of Prince Charles
Edmonton itself is a fairly young vibrant city of Northern Alberta and capital of the province, making it the centre of activity in the region. When you need a break from city living, a day trip to Elk Island National Park or time in the Canadian Rockies are within easy reach.
Prince Charles is a wonderful, centrally located residential part of North West Edmonton and everything you’d need is a short walk or drive away. Downtown Edmonton is just a 10-minute drive from most homes here. The Prince Charles area is just off the Yellowhead Highway that provides a smooth drive to places further afield. The famous North Saskatchewan River lies south of Prince Charles, about 10 minutes away. Yet, residents treasure the tranquility of returning to their homes here. The neighborhood is dotted with trees and grassy patches, with a few parks thrown in for good measure.
Your New Prince Charles Home in Edmonton
Named in honour of the Prince of Wales himself, this is a neighborhood that’s certainly got all the comforts you’d desire. Earlier known as North Inglewood, it took on its new name after 1953 when the elementary school nearby was renamed to bear the name of HRH Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales.
In the Prince Charles neighborhood, you’ll find a wonderful variety of single-dwelling homes as well as some duplexes. A beautiful historic part of town, many homes here go as far back as World War II and even earlier. New homes added to the landscape make this area the perfect mix of the old and the new.
In the heart of the neighborhood is Prince Charles Park, where residents meet and mingle as they set out on walks or just to enjoy the outdoors. On the northwestern edge of the area is Prince Charles Elementary School, one of many good schools in Edmonton that parents of school-age kids can consider ending their children to.
Visually too, this community couldn’t be more different from the steel and glass high-rises just minutes away in Downtown. Here, the skyline is clear of construction and your views of the trees unhampered. Ideal for large picture frame windows that you can sit by as the sunlight floods your home.
Things to do in Prince Charles
Nature lovers love the heady mix of things to do all year round. You could follow a trail in nearby Mackinnon Ravine Park or Terwillegar Park. Or visit The Muttart Conservatory with its glass pyramid biomes. Hawrelak Park is the perfect example of how Edmonton reinvents itself in winter. In summer, this is a lovely area to have a picnic and enjoy the verdant landscape of this river valley region. Come winter and the park is covered with a blanket of white snow that’s perfect for cross-country skiing. Toss in some local favourites like skijoring(having your dog tug you along while you’re on skis!) and this city is a winter wonderland for residents!
Golf courses set by the river’s edge make for a very scenic round of golf. Locals also enjoy sports like archery, fishing, and cycling. The Peter Hemingway Fitness and Leisure Centre with its unique design has tennis courts, a swimming pool, steam room, sauna, and fitness centre- all you need for your fitness routine in what’s virtually your backyard!
Craft breweries and an eclectic mix of restaurants provide ample opportunities for your downtime. The events calendar features show by international acts, classical ensembles, ballets, and more. The Edmonton International Fringe Festival swings around in August every year and is one of North America’s biggest and oldest fringe festivals. Throw yourself into the action and volunteer at the event or just enjoy the talent on display! The Edmonton Folk Music Festival is another highlight and is a delight for folk music fans. This outdoor event is a great way to enjoy the lovely August weather with some great food and wonderful company.
Art and history buffs appreciate having the impressive Royal Alberta Museum and the stunning new-age Art gallery of Alberta close at hand. Perfect for diving into local history and culture or introducing the kids to an interactive learning experience. Nearby, Kingsway Mall has all the big name brands you’d want and a food court that’s frequented by locals. If you need to indulge in some serious retail therapy though, West Edmonton Mall beckons, just a few kilometres away. Indie boutiques and the vibrant nightlife of Strathcona are close enough for you to enjoy, but far enough to allow your home to be the quiet retreat you always wanted.
To meet and mingle with other residents of this delightful city, venues and events like the Old Strathcona farmers market are ideal. Pick up fresh local produce and appreciate the craftsmanship on display in the pottery, clothing, accessories, and handicrafts stalls. What makes this market extra special is that unlike most other Farmers Markets, this one is indoors - so it can stay open every Saturday regardless of the weather! So go ahead and start making plans to go with your soon-to-be-neighbours.
