Tucked away in southeast Edmonton lies the pretty neighbourhood of Menisa, which is one of the 27 communities that constitute Mill Woods and is one of three that make up the community of Knottwood.
While higher density housing and commercial sites are conveniently situated along collector roadways, families looking to invest in more private properties also have great options because a majority of the addresses are single family homes. On the interior, curvilinear streets and cul-de-sac designs ensure a majority of traffic is relegated to the exterior and at the same time delivers an efficient flow of traffic within the confines of the neighborhood. Coupled with strategically positioned pathways, this provides for a tranquil pedestrian-friendly community ideal for growing families.
At the heart of the neighbourhood lies a vibrant shopping centre, a multi-purpose school, and park. Your New Menisa Home in Edmonton
Menisa is the Cree term for “berries”, which the neighbourhood had an abundance of prior to urban development commencing and is probably how the name of the community originated.
As the price of serviced real estate started to considerably rise in 1970, the Government of Alberta took over the Mill Woods land bank. As soon as an urban development plan was in place, in 1971, the City of Edmonton proceeded to buy land, subdivide it and started selling commercial and residential plots. So by 1986 residential construction, which had commenced in Menisa a decade earlier, was almost complete, and by 1995 the area was transformed into a homeowner haven richly endowed with amenities.
A large majority of the residences in the neighbourhood are comfortable single-detached family homes, while row houses make up a smaller percentage of the addresses and the remaining constitute smart semi-detached houses and trendy apartments. In addition, The York Mills complex also features stylish condominiums as well. So there are plenty of options to suit a variety of lifestyle requirements. And a majority of the residences are owner-occupied.
Nestled in the nucleus of the community is the Menisa Elementary School, which offers a holistic learning environment from Kindergarten to Grade 6. In addition, the Ekota School, located only 2 minutes away from Menisa provides regular and special learning programs as well from Grades K – 6. Plus, there are a host of well-established junior high schools in the vicinity as well including the exceptional Vernon Barford School and the Father Michael Troy Catholic Junior High School, which are both situated an equal distance away from the neighbourhood. Which is why parents and kids in the area are always spoilt for choice.

Another much-loved attraction in the area is Fort Edmonton Park. Situated only 20 minutes away from Menisa, and spread across 158 acres of wooded parkland, this historically themed venue is a fun learning experience that takes visitors on a journey through time employing steam train and original streetcar rides, and horse-drawn rides and sleigh rides. In addition, the park is currently undergoing a multi-million dollar enhancement, which once complete will provide visitors with even more thrilling options.
Southeast Edmonton is also blessed with an array of stunning golf courses as well. From the Mill Woods Golf Course and the famous Derrick Golf and Winter Club to the Jagare Ridge Golf Club, there isn't a dearth of options for golf aficionados in this quadrant of the city.
Menisa belongs to the Knottwood Community League, which brings together people from the neighbouring communities of Ekota and Satoo too. Founded in 1977, the league has a community hall, rink and community centre, which is the venue for fun social gatherings and classes that bolster the communal vibe. Plus, the league also drives resident based initiatives that benefit the community as a whole.

Situated only 23 minutes away from the pulsating hub of the City, which is home to North America’s largest mall, Canada’s largest living history museum, the best restaurants, retail stores, art galleries, theatres, theme parks, sports and recreational facilities, Menisa also provides its residents with a safe environment perfect for growing families.
