The People and The Real Estate in King Edward Park

Quiet, tree lined streets, quaint old fashioned homes rubbing shoulders with modern low rise apartments and a calm, warm, welcoming environment- that’s King Edward Park for you in a nutshell. The neighbourhood is as close to nature as you can get with Mill Creek Ravine forming one boundary and that gives this location a great advantage as a real estate market. For those who love nature, King Edward Park homes are a smart investment indeed, not just because of the proximity to the ravine, but also because the neighbourhood is so close to the buzz and bustle of Strathcona, one of the most happening locations in the City of Edmonton. With access to the university, a community that is committed to making the neighbourhood better, what more could you ask for when you are thinking of moving to a new area in Edmonton?

The New Community of King Edward Park

King Edward Park is located in south east part of Edmonton. It is bounded by 82nd Avenue on the north and 76th Avenue on the south. The community is sandwiched between Mill Creek Ravine and the 71st street on the two other sides. Whyte Avenue lies close to the neighbourhood as do the more popular of the river valley path systems.

King Edward Park is surrounded by the communities of Bonnie Doon, Idylwylde, Ritchie and Avonmore. Strathcona is quite accessible from King Edward Park as well, which gives this neighbourhood a special advantage given how popular this old part of Edmonton is for its many attractions, mainly the Farmer’s Market.

Since it is also close to the University, this neighbourhood is a preferred location for families with older children. The fact that there is a sound public transport system here with frequent services to Downtown Edmonton is yet another point in King Edward Park’s favour especially for those who have to get to the latter area for work.

Your New King Edward Park Home in Edmonton

As the name suggests, this community was named after King Edward VII the eldest son of Queen Victoria. The community was already known by this name before it became part of the City of Edmonton. It was annexed in the year 1912 and is today, one of the most mature neighbourhoods in Edmonton. The area was relatively untouched until the 1950’s although it did have the few residents living here. It was after this period that the community came into its own.  Homes were built here right before the World War II and after the war the construction activity resumed.

If you had visited King Edward Park a decade ago, you might have seen that a large number of homes were old fashioned ones, perhaps dating back to World War times. A good number of the single family detached homes that you see even today are older ones. However, in the recent years a lot of redevelopment has been happening in these parts and as a result; you can now see many new infill homes as well as duplex homes here.

Take a quick stroll around the neighbourhood and you will find that as you get further towards the western end of King Edward Park, the homes are older. This is where the neighbourhood is bordered by Mill Creek Ravine and this was the first part of the location to have people settling in. The fact that the railway tracks wound through this side of the neighbourhood may also have contributed to the popularity of the location then. When this neighbourhood was just beginning to develop, the Yukon, Edmonton and Pacific rail lines went through Mill Creek Ravine, close enough so that the householders here could hear the trains when they rattled past. Now, a pathway runs here in place of the train lines, connecting the North Saskatchewan River Valley park system to the Mill Creek Ravine.

There are two schools here. The Edmonton Public School System operates the Donnan Elementary Junior High School here in King Edward Park while the other school in this area is St. James Catholic Elementary School run by the Edmonton Catholic School System.

Things to do in King Edward Park

The proximity of the Mill Creek Ravine makes it a simple thing for nature enthusiasts in King Edward Park to find something to do every weekend. With many tracks and hiking trails to explore, there are virtually innumerable places to explore here. A longer journey can take one to the well laid out parks in the neighbouring communities too for a change.

Bonnie Doon Mall in the north of this locale is a good place if you want to get some shopping done. You will find many retail stores here and service providers too right here at the mall. The nearby Whyte Avenue is also a good place to go to if you want to do some shopping, and there are also quite a few stores to the east of 75th street. Whyte Avenue is, in fact, your link to Old Strathcona, which is one of the oldest and most buzzing centres of Edmonton. This area comes alive at night with music, dance, theatre and of course, great food, available easily. Old Strathcona is also where you will find the Farmer’s Market, which is one of the most popular destinations for Edmonton residents. For fresh fare from the local farmers, all you have to do is head down here. The University of Alberta’s north campus is accessible via Whyte venue too.

For those with a keen interest in sports, the King Edward Park community league has an outdoor hockey rink at Duncan Innes Park. Apart from this full size rink that is open to all community league members, the community also builds and maintains a smaller one for children right beside this, most years. They also have tennis courts- 3 Plexipave ones with great lighting,  located right beside the rink, courtesy of the tennis club operated by the community league since the 1960s. Community League membership also gets you entry and use of select pools in the area, so once you settle down in King Edward Park, it might be a good move to register yourself here.
