The New Community of Gold Bar
This neighbourhood, located in Southeast Edmonton, is bordered by 50th Street on the west side. On its east are the Gold Bar Ravine and Goldstick Park. To the south, the 101st Avenue forms the neighbourhood’s border. The community actually overlooks the Gold Bar Ravine, which makes this a great place if you want to live close to nature’s most beautiful locales. To the north, Gold Bar’s borders are formed by the 50th street that takes a zig zag path right until it meets the Gold Bar Ravine. Nearby neighbourhoods are Capilano, Fulton Place, Ottewell and Eastgate Business Park.
The neighbourhood is located close enough to the University area as well as Edmonton’s bustling Downtown area to make it a very popular spot for both students and young professionals. Connected with a good transportation network, Gold Bar is an ideal choice if you want to avoid staying in a place that puts you a long drive from the heart of the city. Most residents quickly drive down to get to the various amenities here or make a speedy trip to Downtown areas or Strathcona.
The 50th Street and 101st Avenue are the arterial roads here with the residents getting access to most services and amenities from these roads. In the western side 50th Street also gives you easy access to other parts of Edmonton. As a resident of Gold Bar, you can also quickly reach Baseline Road and Wayne Gretzky Drive.

This was the area where a lot of gold prospecting used to happen before the 1950’s. Much of the activity around these parts in those days was centred around this and this is probably why the area got the name Gold Bar Farm back then. Later on, the name stayed on for this community even when this turned into a residential neighbourhood.
The practice of naming prominent landmarks in the neighbourhood after respected members of the community is continued here in Gold Bar. You will see that the Goldstick Park is named after Rabbi Hyman Goldstick, who was the first rabbi in Edmonton. He arrived in Edmonton in the year 1906 and played a significant role in leading the small Jewish community here in this locality. Later on he moved to Edson and even served there as mayor and town councilor for a while.
Homes in Gold Bar are typically the single family detached home type and you will find quite a few sprawling bungalows here with great open backyards. For these kinds of homes, Gold Bar is actually one of the most preferred locations in Edmonton area so these tend to be in demand most of the year. For parents of young children, good schools are not a problem at all in Gold Bar. There is a public school here within the neighbourhood- the Gold Bar Elementary School. Another school, Mount Carmel Bible School, is the private schooling option.
Things to do in Gold Bar
The Community league here is a very efficient one that maintains the amenities in excellent condition. They manage a community hall here and the outdoor rink that is run by them is one of the most popular hangouts for Gold Bar residents in winter months. Apart from this, the neighbourhood has the Gold Bar Ravine bordering it and this is an excellent place for nature lovers to enjoy their fill of trekking and hiking. You can get some spectacular views right here without even stepping foot out of the community.
If scenic beauty is what you are looking for, the North Saskatchewan River Valley park system is perhaps the best place for you to head to on a weekend. The parks are all interconnected so getting from one to another is easy and you can even take a Segway ride through them if you are not feeling like walking down the well maintained paths and trails. Just head to Goldstick Park if you are feeling like relaxing and enjoying your solitude in the midst of lush greenery.
For change of scenery, you can do your shopping at Capilano Mall in Ottewell, close by. If it’s nightlife you want, then just head to Downtown and you have plenty of options to choose from be it restaurants or shopping options or some drama, dance and music. Downtown is known for its nightlife so don’t miss the opportunity to spend an evening here and wind up the night with a sumptuous dinner, Edmonton style at one of the local restaurants that dot the streets here.
