This was the area where a lot of gold prospecting used to happen before the 1950’s. Much of the activity around these parts in those days was centred around this and this is probably why the area got the name Gold Bar Farm back then. Later on, the name stayed on for this community even when this turned into a residential neighbourhood.

The practice of naming prominent landmarks in the neighbourhood after respected members of the community is continued here in Gold Bar. You will see that the Goldstick Park is named after Rabbi Hyman Goldstick, who was the first rabbi in Edmonton. He arrived in Edmonton in the year 1906 and played a significant role in leading the small Jewish community here in this locality. Later on he moved to Edson and even served there as mayor and town councilor for a while.

For these kinds of homes, Gold Bar is actually one of the most preferred locations in Edmonton area so these tend to be in demand most of the year. In fact, the homes are on market for significantly less time that is the average here in Edmonton. A good number of the homes in the neighbourhood date back to the end of the 1950s and some go back World War II too. The relatively fewer row houses that you will see here are mainly clustered south side of the neighbourhood.

The street layout comprises of crescents seamlessly integrated with the modified grid pattern. A predominance of older residents was the norm earlier but this is changing now as students and young professionals increasingly identify the advantages the neighbourhood has thanks to the University and downtown areas lying nearby.
