The peaceful tree lined streets, charming homes, and welcoming neighbours and neatly laid out community are sure to catch your attention. This community is one of the more  recent ones in Edmonton to develop and that’s why it offers both the old world charm of its older neighbours with respect to the overall neighbourhood planning design yet has modern home styles with all the amenities you could possibly think of.

A predominantly residential neighbourhood, Evansdale is perfect for raising a family or spending your retirement years in a beautiful home surrounded by helpful folk. Schools, shopping areas, churches, medical facilities- you name it, Evansdale has it all on offer. Add to all of these, the fact that thanks to excellent connectivity, you are just a quick drive away from the buzzing heart of Edmonton and it is easy to see why properties here are in good demand all round the year.

The New Community of Evansdale

The major attraction that Evansdale holds for new home owners and tenants is that it is surrounded by major roadways on all sides, thus making it really well connected.  This northeast Edmonton neighbourhood is encircled by the 153rd Avenue, 82nd Street, 144th Avenue, and 97th Street. The neighbourhoods surrounding Evansdale are Griesbach, the Eaux Claires, Belle Rive, Kilkenny and Northmount.

The 97th street, in main, is an arterial road that leads to major hubs in Edmonton’s commercial areas. It affords access to both CFB Edmonton and the downtown areas. Connectivity via Edmonton Transit System is efficient in Evansdale.  You will find the Northgate Transit Centre right next to North Town Mall to the north of 137 Street. Apart from this, Belvedere LRT and DL MacDonald Platform are both located approximately 2.5 kms from here. Clareview Station and Coliseum station are located just a little bit further than that but are still very accessible. In short, Evansdale is very well connected by the LRT to other parts of Edmonton.

This north east Edmonton neighbourhood is part of the Dickinsfield community along with its neighbour, Northmount. Dickinsfield is encircled on the south side by 137 Avenue, to the north side by 157 Avenue, 82 Street circles it on the east and 97 Street in the west. 144 Avenue runs right through the community, dividing it into two parts. The southern segment makes up the community of Northmount and the northern one makes up the neighbourhood of Evansdale.

Evansdale gets its name from Harry Marshall Erskine Evans, who was Edmonton's mayor in 1918 and also the president of the Edmonton Board of Trade in 1916. Evans came to Edmonton from Ontario in 1907 and here he started a finance company. He was a prominent figure especially after he served the role of financial advisor to the provincial government. In 1946, Evans was granted the Order of the British Empire. Later, in 1961, Evansdale, along with many other neighbourhoods was annexed into the city of Edmonton as was much of the land extending right for Dickinsfield to Beverly.

A major part of the development in Evansdale took place in the 1970s. The infill development did not happen at this time and this took a while longer to start. It was in the 1980’s and 1990’s that the infill development happened. A relatively recently developed neighbourhood, the housing styles are a mix of modern home designs and slightly older models.  You will find a good mix of house types here with single family detached homes rubbing shoulders with semi detached homes, low rise apartment complexes and row homes.

One of the biggest advantages that Evansdale has to offer is the access it affords to some good schools. This factor makes it a preferred place for young parents. Within the community you have three schools. The Edmonton Public Schools system operates the Evansdale Elementary School located here. The Edmonton Catholic Schools system operates two schools here, the St. Philip Catholic Elementary School and the Cardinal Leger Catholic Junior High School. Nearby, in Northmount, there are three more schools that are easily accessible from Evansdale.

One of the factors that people look for before choosing a location for settling down is whether or not they have access to good medical facilities from here. Evansdale has an advantage in that respect as well with the Dickinsfield Extended Care Hospital that is located just next door in Northmount.

Things to do in Evansdale

Easy access to Edmonton downtown gives Evansdale residents the opportunity to experience the exciting nightlife here as well as try out the exotic dining options that dot the streets. The Muttart Conservatory is a good place for nature lovers to visit here, while art lovers can spend time at the Art Gallery of Alberta. Downtown Edmonton is also home to the Winspear Centre for Music and the Royal Alberta Museum so you have plenty to do if you want to spend the day here.

A plethora of commercial services in Dickinsfield Mall serve to ensure that the residents here do not have to go very far looking for what they need. This is one of the most frequented shopping spots for Evansdale dwellers although North Town Mall gets its share of patrons from this community too. Another comprehensive shopping area is Northgate Centre, which lies across North Town Mall. Here, apart from a Wal-Mart, Spa Lady, Safeway and Marshalls, you have quite a few other establishments as well as clinics, salons, financial services, music stores etc.  Several restaurants are located in this mall as well.

The community league maintains an outdoor rink that is a favourite hangout spot for residents in the winter months. This is in addition to other facilities that they maintain here. The league also ensures that regular activities like soccer, hockey, baseball games and kids programs are held throughout the year to enable the residents to interact with fellow neighbours and build a stronger community.
