The neighbourhood takes its name from J.J. Duggan, who was one of the early settlers in the Edmonton area. Duggan also went on to become mayor of Strathcona for two distinct time periods. Some area that is located in the south side of the city’s original boundaries belonged to him and this now forms a portion of the neighbourhood.
The major part of the development in this area took place in the 1960s although the peak activity can be traced back to the 1970s. Later on, while the buzz was subdued, development activity did not completely die cease and throughout the 1980s, it was fairly consistent though low key. However, during this phase, redevelopment took precedence. As a result of this, you will see an interesting mix of ages and styles in the structures and homes that you will find in Duggan.
