The New Community of Canora
Canora gets its name from the "Canadian Northern Railway" when the first two letters of each of the words are combined. This was the winning entry in a naming contest held in 1948 for a new school near Canadian Northern Railway’s abandoned right of way. An 8th grader, who observed that the school was next to the old line of Canadian Northern Railway, had submitted the winning entry.
The school building was located originally in West Jasper Place hamlet. The hamlet quickly developed into a village, and the name was changed to Jasper Place which later developed into a town in 1949.
The name Canora became applicable to the school’s surrounding neighborhood as well in due course. With the merging of Jasper Place into the city, Canora went on to become a part of the city of Edmonton in 1964.
