The junction of the Whitemud Freeway and 53rd Avenue are the only used access points to Brookside. Brookside was annexed to the City of Edmonton in 1960 and started developing shortly afterwards. The Brookside residential construction preceded the overall Riverbend-Terwillegar Heights Outline Plan. Brookside community was quickly established after a sub-division re-plot in 1968. It came under the Riverbend-Terwillegar Heights Outline Plan in 1969.

The neighbourhood of Brookside was named as an indirect reference to its location, as it is adjacent to Whitemud Creek. Most of the homes in Brookside neighbourhood are vintage executive-style homes with above-average-sized lots and mature landscaping. Residential construction in Brookside completed in 1980. Since then, the community added fifteen residential units in the last three decades.

The Brookside Elementary School is located within the community, and there are several schools in the neighbourhood, like Brander Gardens, and St. Monica School, which is located to the west of Whitemud Drive.

The Riverbend Community League, located in the park next to the Brookside Elementary School, provides activities and events throughout the year. Brookside is home to Brookside Park and the William Bramley-Moore park. Visitors can also visit the Rainbow Valley Park and the associated Rainbow Valley Camp Ground and Snow Valley Ski Club that offer several recreational activities. 

Brookside is a quiet community surrounded by nature. Saskatchewan River Valley and the Whitemud Creek Ravine are ideal places to visit for nature lovers. Whitemud Creek Ravine offers skiing and other recreational facilities. Nature lovers can enjoy an early morning run or a sunset jog at the river valley park trails. The woodland habitat offers a tranquil to nature lovers. 

There are several commercial centres at the Whitemud Freeway which is easily accessible by the residents of Brookside. Residents can also visit the Brander Gardens Shopping Plaza and Riverbend Square Shopping Centre which are located nearby. Other places to visit include the famous Fort Edmonton Park, the Belgravia Off-Leash site, Footie Field, the University Area, the Saville Sports Centre and the West Edmonton Mall.
